Equality Committee

We are incredibly happy about the response to our call for volunteers for the Equality Committee. It shows there is an interest to make MZU better. We are thrilled with the care and attention they gave a variety of issues and concerns facing equality in MZU. The discussions and outcomes will help fuel a more inclusive MZU. MZU is at the point now where we need greater feedback from our membership about equality and MZU. The committee has created a survey to measure your perception of gender equality and the concept of equal participation with Mile Zero Ultimate Leagues.

We are asking all members to take a few minutes to complete this survey. The responses we receive will help future initiatives of the Equality Committee and improve MZU as a whole.

MZU Summer League Registration: Flaherty Cup League

TL;DR Version:

  • -Deadline to express interest for Flaherty League is March 23 (do this by emailing Hi@MileZeroUltimate.Com)
  • – Team Registration for Flaherty League opens March 30th
  • – You cannot play Flaherty League and MZU Summer League
  • – There is no individual registration for Flaherty League only Team Registration.
  • – MZU Summer League registration is April 17th

Long Read:

It seems crazy to think we are already talking about Summer League 2015, but alas it is just around the corner. As we discussed at the recent Town Hall meeting, we are changing up our approach to summer this year. We are trying something new, that we hope will help provide a better experience for all of our players. This new approach was based on feedback from a bunch of players, and from discussion with other leagues across the country. If it works like we think it will, this will make for a great summer.

We are splitting MZU Summer League into two leagues. A league that competes for the Flaherty Cup, and MZU Summer League which will compete for a new trophy. The Flaherty Cup League will comprise of highly competitive teams featuring players that have been playing the sport for a long time. TheMZU Summer League will feature competitive teams that have been playing for awhile, and also new teams and players who are new to the sport.
To determine if we can go ahead with splitting the two leagues, we first have to determine if we have enough interest in a highly competitive league. To do this, we are asking for Captain’s of any team interested in playing in the Flaherty Cup League to email Hi@MileZeroUltimate.Com by March 23 indicating your team name and a preliminary roster.

We will then work with the teams who have registered to determine if Monday or Wednesday is the better night for this league to occur on. We will do this by March 30th.

Once we determine if we have enough teams to have a highly competitive league separate from our regular league we will open registration team registration (similar to registration for Team Winter League) March 31st to April 10th.

On April 17th, registration for MZU Summer League.

See you on the field,

MZU Board

MZU Town Hall Slides

Last month we held a Town Hall Meeting to discuss MZU’s plan for the year, as well as some findings from the Ultimate Canada Conference. By having dedicated field space this summer, we were able to plan out the league fully for the first time, and make some cool tweaks that should result in a better Summer League Experience. As always, we welcome and encourage your feedback. You can ask questions or provide comment by checking out the album on Facebook and posting on the individual slide. Additionally, you can view the slides in PDF format here . If you would like to provide your feedback privately, you can email Hi@MileZeroUltimate.Com.

MZU is looking for people to join our new Women’s Committee

MZU is forming a Women’s Committee. The objective of the committee is to engage, empower, and develop the female players in MZU. It is to examine our current Co-ed experience and determine what is working well, and what should change. We hope by forming this committee it will enhance the overall member experience of all players in MZU. What we need now, is MZU players both male and female to step up and join this committee. To bring your great ideas and attitudes towards enhancing the MZU experience. If you are interested in joining this committee please send an email to President@MileZeroUltimate.Com with a few reasons why you want to join this committee.

The deadline to express interest in joining the committee is March 12th. Once the committee is formed, they will be tasked with presenting a proposal back to MZU on how to improve the member experience for women. The MZU board will then assist in the implementation of this plan.

This initiative was borrowed from Toronto Ultimate Club (TUC) and you can read about what they did here

We’re all super excited about this initiative and can’t wait to see what awesome ideas our members bring forward.
