Summer League Playoff Structure

Here is your 2014 Capital Subaru Playoff Structure – all going down on Saturday, August 23th at Fieldian’s and Ayre Athletic Grounds (for now).

There will be 4 playoff divisions:

Top 4 teams play for Flaherty Cup (Division 1)
Teams 5-12 play for Division 2 Title
Teams 13-20 play for Division 3 Title
Teams 21-28 play for Division 4 Title

– All teams get 2 guaranteed games, some will have 3 depending on performance
– For Division 1 – 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 with winners playing each other for championship and losers playing for 3rd place.
– For Divisions 2, 3 & 4 – 8 team single elimination bracket with losers playing consolation games

Q: How did you guys decide the structure?
A: Our League Committee sits down together and looks at all the factors in play. These include ensuring everyone gets 2 games, level of competition, scheduling, field availability, avoiding back-to-back games, avoiding too many games in the day – and the big one that we’ve heard you loud and clear over – ensuring playoffs take place in one day. The Committee discussed a number of scenarios, and then finally put forward a recommendation to the Board.

Q: At the end of the Regular Season, do teams move up/down a tier.
A: Yes. There will be one more movement at the end of this round.

Q: How many teams do we have this year?
A: We have 28 of 30 teams playing in the playoffs this year!

Q: Why did you separate Div 1 into  a smaller group?
A: This is never an easy decision, as we know people have a lot of opinions on it. In the end, it came down to two things… it provided the most number of teams with a level of competition that more closely aligned with their skill level and the level they have faced all year. And, second, it avoided a system of numerous bys in various divisions. This ensured a smoother and easier playoff day for all involved.

Q: So, who is the overall winner?
A: Well, using our ladder structure, the top team in our league will be the overall winner and take home the Flaherty Cup. However, we’ll also have some fun trophies for Divisions 2,3 and 4.

Q: How awesome is playoff day going to be?

Q: If my team loses a game, are we done?
A: If you lose your first game, you are out of contention for the trophy of your respective division; however, you will get to play again in a consolation game! Everyone is guaranteed at least 2 games!

Subbing for Summer! (2014)

To help meet subbing demands, players can now sub 6 games in a season. But, a few things to also remember:

– You can still only sub 1 playoff game, and it is included in your 6 total.
– If you are having major playoff issues with players, please contact MZU and we will address it on a case-by-case basis.

Monday Night League – REGISTER NOW!

We’re trying something a little old, and a little new! Monday Night League is launching again with 7 weeks of Ultimate for $20… and the format is Open. What that means is that team/league structure will depend on the number of people that register! SIGN UP NOW!

  • When: Monday Nights
  • Duration: 7 weeks (July 12 – Aug 25)
  • Who: Anyone 19+ … we’re a coed league! Beginners welcome.
  • Cost: $20 reg fee (PLUS $30 UNL fee if you aren’t already playing Summer
  • Signing Up: Register as individuals or pairs
  • Team/League Format: Open format, so the team composition and league format, including gender ratio and team numbers are dependent on the number of people that register.
  • Team Building: Teambuilding by our Board where necessary
  • Registration: OPEN now, closes July 12 in the morning

Tiebreaker Questions

We had announced a while back in February that we were ditching Spirit as a tiebreaker, but we didn’t fully outline the rules… so, here is the order we’ll follow (as outlined on Zuluru too!).

1) Head-to-Head. If the teams who are tied have played each other, the team who won that game wins the tiebreaker.
2) Head-to-Head Plus-Minus. This will not apply to our Summer League as this would only be relevant for teams that have played each other more than once and split those games. For example if two teams played each other twice and each won a game, this would be used to break the tie. Teams will never play each other more than once in a single round.
3) Plus-Minus. This will be used if teams have played each other and tied, OR have not played each other at all. The total plus-minus for the round will be used and the team with the higher number wins the tiebreaker.
4) 4th Tiebreaker is Goals For. This will be used if all of the conditions exist to go to plus-minus, AND the teams in question have the exact same plus-minus rating. Then the team with the most goals scored in the round wins the tiebreaker.

Summer League STARTS TUESDAY!

We’re super pumped for Summer League on Tuesday, so here’s the 5 things you need to do before we start:

3. Go over the rules! Has it been a while?
4. MORE FUN THAN RULES? Yup, league policies.
5. Our jerseys are in & will be delivered to the first game!

Play Ultimate Frisbee this Summer!

Registration opens Monday, April 14th and ends Wednesday, April 30th over at MileZeroUltimate.com

When: Tue, Wed and Thur nights at 5:30pm and 7pm
Duration: 12 weekly games from June 2 – Aug 23
Where: Fields in the St. John’s area
Who: Anyone 19+ … we’re a coed league! Beginners welcome.
Cost: $50 reg fee (jersey included) PLUS $30 UNL fee.
Signing Up: Register as individuals, pairs, groups or a full team of 14 (or more)
Team Composition: 14 player minimum, with a minimum of 6 of either gender

Q: How do the jerseys fit?
A: Find sizing info here!

Q: Do I register solo, with a friend, or as a full team?
A: WHATEVER YOU WANT! We have a wide range of people who register solo, in pairs, small groups or as a full team.

Q: What’s the team format?
A: Teams are composed of a MINIMUM of 14 players with a minimum of 6 guys OR 6 girls. That means you can do 7 and 7, or 8 girls and 6 guys, or 8 guys, 6 girls. YOUR CHOICE.

Q: What if I don’t register on time?
A: Anyone who wants to register for the league will only be added to teams as space becomes available. We will not reserve space on teams for undecided players after April 30th. Jerseys are unavailable for those who register late.

Q: I have never played before, is the league friendly?
A: We’re super friendly. Maybe even too friendly. We’ll get you hooked up with a rule book, resources and your friendly team mates will help you along the way. We also have a Captain’s clinic and other initiatives to introduce people to the game.

Q: Man, I have soooo many questions.
A: No problem, email us at milezeroultimate@gmail.com and you’ll get a swift response.

Q: Who do I put in the partner/captain/team field?!??
A: If registering as a part of a team, you only need to list the team name (preferred) or the captain’s name. If you’re a captain, there’s no need to submit a list of your whole team. If you’re joining as a group, list your group leader or another member(s).

Q: So, what exactly am I getting for my money?
A: Registration is $50, which include, a minimum 12 regular season games plus playoffs, a team jersey from VC Ultimate, and then $30 covers your annual UNL membership.

Q: I registered but didn’t pay…
A: To us, you aren’t registered. You gotta pay to play. No holding spots.

Q: I’m having PayPal trouble, though…
A: No problem, just email us and we’ll help you out.

Q: How do I call dibs on a jersey colour?
A: Choosing a jersey colour is first come-first served based on on when a captain gets 10 players registered.
