Joining a team

Mile Zero runs three leagues per calendar year. As you read this, if the date says either April, early September, or late December, you might be able to register for our Summer, Fall, or Winter leagues respectively.

We maintain a waitlist for each league as well, since people do move on for one reason or another. Each of our leagues is unique in structure and game style, as detailed below.

Summer League

Since Ultimate is mainly played outdoors, and St. John's can be very cold for much of the year, this is our main league.

Historically play starts in early June, and ends in late August. Players are generally allowed to register as individuals, small groups, or fully-formed teams, so you're free to play with your friends or join up and make some new ones.

The Summer League has grown from eight teams in our first league in 2004, to 22 teams in our most recent. In 2006 the Summer League was split into two Tiers with Tier I becoming the more competitive tier and Tier II more recreational, and this has remained the case aside from a few tweaks.

As in all of our leagues, all skill levels are welcome and it is always MZU's committment to provide a safe and spirited environment for both grizzled veterans and exciting, young rookies.

Registration usually takes place in April, but some spots can open up throughout the season so adding your name to the waitlist might get you onto a team before the end of the season.

Fall League

Even though it's starting to get cold, there is still some good Ultimate left to play in the fall. Fall league typically starts in early September and runs until late October or early November.

For 2006-2008 we've been lucky enough to play at King George V field, an outdoor field-turf facility with lights, making the Sunday night games a real showcase for Ultimate in this province.

Teams have been selected via a draft, mixing everyone up enough so that rivalries from the summer can be somewhat diffused. Fall league registration and the draft usually happen in early September. For the last 3 years we've had approximately 180 spots available, a number which is unlikely to increase due to field restrictions, but there may be options to sub our get picked up so if you miss registration it's still a good idea to register yourself for the waitlist.

Winter League

Winter league is unique in that it's our only league that's played indoors. Our smallest league has accommodated between 60-80 players for the past three seasons, but the small group has had a great time celebrating victory or drowning their sorrow at the Black Dog Pub after the games.

This league usually runs from January to April, but registration has filled up within 24 hours in the past, so you really have to be enthusiastic to get into this one.

If you miss registration, your best bet to get some frisbee in during the winter may be to check out some of the pickup games at Memorial Univeristy.
